An introduction to iOS Screen Time

February 03, 2023

If you've looked into digital wellness or looked up how to lessen phone usage, you have probably heard of iOS Screen Time. Screen Time comes standard on Apple iOS devices and lets users track and manage their screen time. Introduced in iOS 12, Screen Time provides users with historical info on how much users use on their device, which apps they use the most, and allows users to set limits on overall screen time or individual app usage.

Some of the key features of iOS Screen Time include:

Usage tracking

Screen Time provides users with a detailed breakdown of their daily and weekly device usage, including how much time they spend on specific apps and categories of apps. Typically, users are notified every week of their screen time usage and can reflect and plan for the next week. Progress is visible and calculated realtime so users can see their usage for each day up until the current moment.

App limits

Users can set daily or weekly limits on how much time they want to spend on specific apps or categories of apps. Once the limit is reached, the app will be locked and the user will need to override the limit to continue using it.

Downtime

Users can set a schedule for when they want to be "offline" and limit their access to certain apps during this time. This is especially useful for promoting healthy sleep habits and reducing late-night device usage.

Content and privacy restrictions:

Screen Time also allows users to set content and privacy restrictions, such as blocking certain websites, preventing app installs, and limiting access to specific features of the device.

Family sharing:

Screen Time can also be used to monitor and manage the device usage of family members who are part of an iCloud Family Sharing group. This is particularly useful for parents who want to set usage limits and content restrictions for their children.

Overall, iOS Screen Time is a powerful tool for managing device usage and promoting healthy habits around technology. Whether you want to track your own screen time, limit app usage, or manage the device usage of family members, Screen Time provides a range of useful features and insights to help you achieve your goals.

Fun fact: Many third-party applications are built on the Apple Screen Time API, which makes similar functionality accessible to third-party apps and is secure by default. Many apps introduced before 2019 used Mobile Device Management (MDM) before the Screen Time API, which was a privacy risk.
